“What Does It Mean?”

“What Does It Mean?”
~Michelle Lores 2016~

A little child stood lost and alone

With no home to call his own.

He had no father.  He had no mother.  He did not have a family.

But one night came and changed everything.

It was the night he took a journey.

He never knew if he was asleep or awake—

He only knew what he saw.

And in the morning he just had to take

His questions to one who would tell him the truth no matter what.

So he went to the church and knocked on the door—

And who there did he see?

An older man with very kind eyes who said,

“Yes?  Were you looking for me?”

Jakob, the little lost boy,

So ragged and all alone

Said, “Yes, mister, if you please,

You see, I don’t have a home,

“No mom, no dad to talk to or ask

What things mean,

So I’m coming to you to see if you can tell me

The meaning of my dream.”

Well, the older man’s white eyebrows went up

At the mention of a dream,

But his eyes remained kind,

For he was not mean.

“I tell you what,” Pastor Jim said.

“I will listen, and if I know the answer,

I will tell you right away.

Then we can get to know each other better.”

After Jakob had agreed,

He began to tell his dream.

He told everything he saw—

And all that he had seen.

“First I saw an empty manger

On a starry night—

And I wondered:

‘What does it mean?’

Next, I saw an empty cross

And a dark sky—

And I wondered:

‘What does it mean?’

Then I saw an empty tomb

With a stone rolled away—

And I wondered:

‘What does it mean?’

“Then I saw a blue sky

With white clouds and eleven men looking up at it—

And I wondered:

‘What does it mean?’

“And I saw a white dove

And flames of fire floating above men and women’s heads—

And I wondered:

‘What does this mean?’

“And then I saw a lot of green—

Green grass and green trees—

And I wondered yet again:

‘What does this mean?’

“And last of all, I saw

A church full of people—

And I wondered:

‘What does it mean?’

“Mister,” Jakob said,

“Your church was in my dream.

Can you tell me—

O please can you tell me what it all means?”

The older man smiled

And looked up to heaven.

For he saw once again that God is truly amazing,

And he took a moment to thank Him.

Then Pastor Jim said,

“Yes, my son—you see,

What you saw is all about Jesus.

He has sent you to me,

Because He wants you to know Him,

And He wants you to finally have a family.

Jesus came from heaven—

He is the Son of God,

He was born to a woman by the power of the Holy Spirit

And laid in a manger like you saw.

But He didn’t stay there—

He grew up and died for our sins

On a cruel cross like you saw.

He was blameless, and all our punishment was laid upon Him.

But he didn’t stay dead.

Three days later, He rose from the grave.

His tomb was empty—just as you saw—

He rose from the dead—us to save.

Then you saw men—

Staring up at the sky.

Jesus went back to heaven,

To rule and reign on High.

Then you saw a white dove

And bright flames of fire.

That was the arrival of the Holy Spirit—

Jesus’ promised Helper.

Then you saw a lot of green—

Everywhere you looked.

That green means growth that we all need.

That comes from living the Truth of the Good Book.

Lastly, you saw my church full of people—

And why are they here?

Because they love Jesus, they have been forgiven and saved by His grace,

And they are now God’s family full of His love and His care.

“But how do you be a part of that family?”

Jakob asked, looking sad.

“I probably wouldn’t count.

No one would choose me—I’m too bad.”

“Son,” Pastor Jim said.

“Jesus came and died for YOU.

He took all the bad things you’ve ever done upon Himself,

And bore the punishment for them too.

“You see, my dear child,

We all deserve death,

But Jesus came so we could have life

If we come to Him to find rest.

“If we seek salvation in Jesus, knowing He is the Son of God,

And we ask for His forgiveness to make us clean,

He will save us from everything we have done bad—

No matter what we have seen.

“Then we give our lives

To follow Jesus as Lord.

We commit to obey Him With the help of His Holy Spirit

And the Word of God—our sword.

“Then we become part of God’s family.

We are baptized into a new life.

We now have a Heavenly Father—

Who will be with us in all good and all strife.”

“So, sir?”  Jakob asked

As he dared to look up.

“What must I do

To belong to such a One?”

“Believe.”  Pastor Jim said.

“Believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead.

And confess.

Confess with your mouth that

‘Jesus is Lord,’

And you will be saved.

“Ask for forgiveness from God,

Turn from your sin.

Be baptized.”

Said Pastor Jim.

“Then LOVE Him with all your heart.

If you do, you will obey Him.

To believe is to follow.

To love is to obey and say no to sin.”

“I do believe,” Jakob said

With a smile on his face.

“Jesus is Lord,

And I need His grace.”

“How do I ask Him to forgive me

And be Lord of my life?”

“Through prayer,” Pastor Jim said.

“Let’s talk to Him now, for prayer is always good and right.”

So Jakob and Pastor Jim

Prayed together that day.

Jakob met Jesus,

And Pastor Jim led the way.

Jakob no longer

Was lost and alone.

He now had a family

Who took care of their own.

The family was none other

Than God’s loving church.

The family of God,

Right here on earth.

Are we doing our part

As God’s family

To reach out to the hurting

And offer help and God’s healing to all those in need?

4. Butterflies and New Creatures—A Button Rose Story

Copyright © 2016 by Michelle Lores

Button Rose sniffed and sniffed.  There were so many delightful smells in the air today!  Ripe berries, fresh clover, and green mint leaves!

Little Button Rose was headed over to Grandma Anna’s garden to gather some bits of shells and pick some flowers and herbs.

Grandma Anna was the farmer’s wife, and she kept a special garden just for the local rabbits.  Button Rose was very thankful for Grandma Anna.

On her way to the Garden, Button Rose saw several butterflies flitting on the wind here and there.  They looked so graceful as they floated on the air.

Button Rose stopped for a moment and just watched one.  She thought of the amazing process that a caterpillar went through to become a butterfly.

What a change!

Button Rose thought for a moment… Just like a caterpillar changes into the completely new form of a butterfly, when a person trusts in Jesus as their Savior and Lord, he or she becomes a new creature, and they receive a new heart.

Button Rose was in complete awe for a moment.

After a long pause filled with her deep thoughts, Button Rose started off again along her path and finished her hop to Grandma Anna’s garden.

She had a lovely time in the peaceful garden, gathering lovely shell bits to trade with and flowers and herbs for her table.

On the way home, Button Rose thought again of how blessed people are to have Jesus.

“Dear God,” Little Button Rose prayed.  “Thank You for Your Son, Jesus.  You are an awesome Creator, and You spoke this whole world into being.

“You are Awesome, Dear God!  I love You with my little bunny heart.  Thank You for making me, and please use me every day for Your glory.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

That night, Button Rose slept very well.

She dreamed that she too—

Was made new.

How about you?

Has Jesus made you new?

Call on Him today,

For He is the Way, the Life, the Truth.

(John 14:6)

May God’s blessings

Forever be upon you!

In Jesus’ Name, Amen!

3. Button Rose Goes to Space

Copyright © 2016 by Michelle Lores

Button Rose woke up bright and early!  She was going someplace very special on this day—she was going to visit outer space!

The first thing little Button Rose did was pack her knapsack.  She made sure to include lots of freeze-dried carrots, parsnips, greens and—of course—some space ice cream!

Next, Button Rose got on the bus that would take her to the rocket that would carry her to the space station.

She was so excited!

She had trained and trained for this day—and it was finally here!

What would it be like to see the world from so far away?

Button Rose closed her eyes to imagine it yet again.

And then she realized she wouldn’t have to imagine it for much longer!

This was really happening!

The rocket fired off without any complications, and the force was incredible!

“God, is this the force that You felt coming from You when You spoke the world into being?”  Button Rose prayed as she just imagined what it must have been like at the beginning of the world!

Before she knew it, little Button Rose had arrived at Creation 1—the Animal Space Station.  She had many tasks to perform during her time here, but before she began, she took a good long look out the window at planet Earth—her home.

It looked so small—

And every care

Down there

Seemed so very far away.

But it was beautiful too.

Green, white, and blue.

Button Rose was without any words to say.

After a moment, Button Rose breathed a prayer:

“Oh, Lord, how beautiful is Your Creation!  Thank You for giving me such a gift—to see the world you created from such a completely different and breathtaking view!

“This glorious feeling of weightlessness in outer space and floating in the air reminds me of how I can be all the time—even when I am on earth—when I give my cares to You.  I don’t ever have to be loaded down by the weight of worry.

“O, Dear God—How I love You!

“In Jesus’ Name, Amen!”

Then—all of a sudden—little Button Rose woke up, blinked her eyes, twitched her nose, and smiled a sleepy smile.

“What a wonderful dream!”  Button Rose said as she yawned, rolled over, and fell back to sleep, entering dreamland once again.

The morning would come soon enough—but for now, sweet dreams little Button Rose!

2. A Beautiful Starry Night—A Button Rose Story

Button Rose looked up at the stars in the sky.

“My, how they twinkle!”  Button Rose said out loud as she just stared at the star-studded sky.

“Mind if I join you?”  Tom Turtle asked as he blinked sleepy eyes and tried to stifle a yawn.

“Hi, Tom!  Of course!  What brings you out here after dark?”

“Well, I want to see a shooting star!”  Tom said, as he got a little excited, and began to wake up some more.

“Who wants to see a shooting star?”  Sally Squirrel asked.  I woke up for a midnight acorn snack and heard the commotion.  What are you guys doin’?”  Sally asked in her perky way with a twitch of her ever active nose.

Button Rose giggled and welcomed Sally to their little star-gazing party.

“Do you know what Mother Hen always says?”  Button Rose asked her two friends.

“What?”  Sally asked with a quizzical look on her face and a swish of her tail.

“Yes, please tell us, B. Rose,” Tom said around a yawn as he looked to his friend, expecting a good story.

Button Rose began, “Well, she says that the stars tell a story.  The story they tell is the story of God’s glory.  Day after day they pour forth speech and night after night they declare knowledge of how great is the glory of God!”

“Wow!”  Tom said.

“You mean they’re talking to us?”  Sally asked.  “Why can’t I ever hear them?”  Sally looked to Button Rose with her head to the side and a question in her eyes.

“Maybe we never listen.”  Button Rose suggested.  “Why don’t we take time now to just be quiet and listen and watch and ask God to speak to us through the beauty of His Creation.  I know He will, and we will hear His voice speaking through the beauty of the sparkling stars He created.”

With that, the three friends agreed to be still and listen for the voice of the stars.

While they never heard anything spoken aloud, each one of them gained a deeper understanding, appreciation, and awe for God—their Creator and the Creator of the universe.

And while they were watching, guess what happened?

Tom got to see his shooting star!

It was a beautiful starry night, indeed!

1. Button Rose and the Rain

Button Rose hopped along one day in awe of the sweet smelling flowers and the grass soaked in dew.  The sun was shining, and a breeze was blowing the whiskers on her face.

“Dear Lord, thank You for such a beautiful day,” Button Rose said with a twitch of her little pink nose as she lifted her face to catch the warm rays of the sun.

But what greeted little Button Rose when she lifted her face to the sun was not a warm ray of sunshine but a cold rain drop instead.

Button Rose blinked in surprise and shook off her face.

“Now where did that rain cloud come from?”  Button Rose wondered aloud.

The sweet little bunny watched as other rabbits took shelter from the summer rain shower.

Just as Button Rose was turning to hop toward home, she stopped.

A thought came to her.

What if I dance in the rain?

Button Rose was all of a sudden so filled with joy that she got up on her hind legs and began to dance for the Lord.

“I love You, God!”  Little Button Rose sang in her sweet bunny voice.

“Thank You for giving me rain when I wanted sun.  I trust You to take today and make something beautiful from it, rain all!  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

The next day, when Button Rose came out from her burrow, what did she find?

A whole field of pink, purple, yellow, and white wildflowers!

The rain had brought them, and Button Rose looked up to thank God once again for the rain.
